Join Us For LANK's 2019 Book Fair!
This week marks one of my favorite special events at LANK: the annual book fair! The reason I love it so much is that as an adult I can still recall my favorite children’s book and how I felt after reading it. For me, the joy for books happened in the second grade when our teacher Miss Zink suggested we dramatize Winnie the Pooh, by A. A. Milne and I auditioned for the part of Roo. However, the following year as a third grader, my love for books would become intense as I discovered Charlotte’s Web written by E.B. White. I adored this book! I still do. I fell in love with the characters, and I believe the message conveyed is one that resonates for both parents and children.
For those unfamiliar, the story introduces the reader to Wilbur; a farm pig, Charlotte his spider friend, and Fern the young girl who nurses baby Wilbur to health, names him, and follows his antics on the farm. The illustrations in the book are black and white, which for me as a child were absolutely perfect; and left my imagination to create vivid hues. As a child of the suburbs, the book took me on a journey to a rural farm, and taught me lessons of friendship, loyalty, life cycles, and grief. The friendship that exists between Fern, Wilbur, Charlotte, and even a farm rat named Templeton, contain all the ingredients necessary for a true bond between others: heroism, caring, kindness, honesty, trust, and loyalty. Toward the end of the novel, Charlotte the spider dies after saving Wilbur’s life. Wilbur in turn saves Charlotte’s egg sac which contains her legacy of future generations. Wilbur is heartbroken, but understands that life continues by caring for Charlotte’s offspring. As an eight year old, I acutely felt Wilbur’s grief, but was also buoyed by knowing Wilbur would remain friends with Charlotte’s progeny.
As you visit the book fair this week, I hope you are inspired to select books that may one day be remembered by your own children, and help support the values and lessons that will endure.
The Book Fair will be held at LANK February 4th-9th in the multipurpose room, and will be open daily during pick up and drop off times. Come in and shop the beautiful selection of books!

We will have teacher recommendations, age level suggestions, and Valentine's books for your special someone.
