Enrichment
Although LANK is extremely focused on its core curriculum, our staff recognizes the importance of enhancing the classroom experience by supplementing it with various Enrichment Programs. This is done on a weekly basis with exposure to music, Spanish, and/or gymnastics and also throughout the school year through various Flagship Units and Special Events.
Flagship Units
Three or four times a year, LANK staff chooses a special curriculum driven topic for Flagship Units that enrich and enhance its basic teaching units. Planning for Flagship Units involves the entire LANK staff as well as the Board of Trustees representative responsible for Special Events. Examples of previous Flagship Units include “Under the Sea,” “Music All Around Us,” “The Jungle,” and “World Celebrations”—each chosen to support specific curriculum goals at LANK.
During Flagship Unit weeks, each class, school-wide, works on the same curriculum topic and a special presentation tailor made for children ages two to six takes place at the school. For example, the Reston Zoo was invited to visit LANK for the Flagship Unit entitled “Who’s in My Backyard?”. For such occasions, parents are encouraged to come see the special exhibits and also the work the children have done in connection with the Flagship Unit.
LANK Staff is very proud of how its curriculum is supported by each of its Flagship Units. We are amazed by how these special units ignite the imaginations of our young students and how the units open up the world a little bit wider for our little scholars to explore.
